Facts you should know about Catalytic Converters

Catalytic converters are fragile chemical reactors that do NOT work for the first 15 minutes and are easily damaged by many factors that cause them to fail and substantially increase pollution

Facts about catalytic converters that vehicle manufacturers neglect to inform consumers so as not to alarm or discourage them from buying environmentally friendly new vehicles.

Catalytic converters...
Are a chemical reactor that use chemical reactions to theoretically change toxic emissions into less harmful emissions
DO NOT begin to work until their temperature exceeds 290°C (550°F)
MUST reach their optimum operating temperature of 430°C (806°F) needed to reduce toxic emissions
Substantially increase toxic emissions for the first 15 minutes from a cold start until they reach 430°C (806°F)
MUST have the exhaust gases that exit the engine alternate rapidly between high CO and O2 gases to reduce toxic emissions. This requires the vehicles computer to precisely alternate the fuel mixture slightly richer and leaner from 14.7. If the computer does not do this properly it substantially increases toxic emissions
Melt as a result of misfire which render them useless
Melt as a result of excessively rich fuel mixture which render them useless
Melt as a result of excessive hydrogen sulphide production caused by high levels of sulphur in the fuel which render them useless
Are damaged by high hydrocarbon (HC) emissions which render them useless
Are damaged by contaminated fuel which render them useless
Are damaged by oil contamination from engine oil leaked into the exhaust system which render them useless
Are damaged by silicone contamination from chemical additives or sealants leaked into the exhaust system which render them useless
Are damaged by engine coolant leaked into the exhaust system which render them useless
Are damaged by lead contamination found in certain additives and leaded fuels which render them useless
Are damaged by carbon contamination caused by excessive short trip driving which render them useless
Are damaged by thermal shock that occurs when a hot catalytic converter is quickly exposed to cold temperature (snow, cold fuel, etc.) which causes it to physically distort and eventually disintegrate

3 out of 9 NEW vehicles have catalytic converters that do NOT work properly!
Scientists led by Dr Zoran Ristovski from the international laboratory for "Air Quality and Health" at Queensland University of Technology in Australia found that 3 out of the 9 NEW vehicles in the LPG study had catalytic converters that didn't work properly. This further proves that fail prone catalytic converters are the major cause of air pollution from new and older vehicles fitted with catalytic converters. For more details see link, Cars converted to gas still pollute in references below.

Failed catalytic converters produce some nasty toxic emissions NOT produced by non-catalytic converter vehicles
If you find it hard to believe that catalytic converters are easily damaged by the engine, substantially increase pollution for the first 15 minutes from a cold start and produce some nasty toxic emissions when they fail... then do a simple test. Sit directly behind the exhaust pipe of a catalytic converter vehicle from a cold start and take deep breaths to see how long it takes to get sick. Or sit behind a vehicle with a failed catalytic converter which should be easy to find. They are the vehicles that smell like rotten eggs which is the highly toxic Hydrogen Sulphur gas. The rotten egg smell confirms the catalytic converter has failed and produces some nasty toxic emissions NOT produced by non-catalytic converter vehicles. Sit directly behind the exhaust pipe of this vehicle for more than 5 minutes with the engine running and youre on your way to getting cancer, leukaemia, respiratory problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, immune system damage, nerve system damage or even brain damage.

Even if you believe the propaganda that fail prone catalytic converter vehicles are environmentally friendly, run clean and can do you no harm, you should still have someone witness the test from a safe distance and monitor your vital signs for 24 hours after the test in case you need urgent medical attention. For more details see below, If catalytic converters (chemical reactors) can be damaged so easily by so many factors...

Conclusions

Catalytic converters (chemical reactors) are a useless pollution control device for motor vehicles because they are easily damaged by many factors that render them useless and substantially increase pollution
In a perfectly controlled environment that allows the catalytic converter to operate at its optimum temperature of 430°C (806°F) at ALL times and does NOT allow misfire, excessive fuel, foreign material or chemicals to pass through and damage the catalytic converter, it is an effective pollution control device.

Unfortunately, the environment of motor vehicles is far from perfect and easily damages the catalytic converter which substantially increases pollution. For example, if all the factors that damage the catalytic converter could be eliminated, excessive short trip driving will still damage the catalytic converter and render it useless whether its brand new or several years old. Add to the problem that catalytic converters do NOT work for the first 15 minutes from a cold start which also substantially increases pollution and damaged they produce more harmful toxic emissions as a result of the unstable chemical reactions. And it doesnt take much to figure out the source of the worlds pollution problem from motor vehiclesMILLIONS of new and older vehicles with FAILED catalytic converters. Therefore, the catalytic converter is a useless pollution control device for motor vehicles.

If catalytic converters (chemical reactors) can be damaged so easily by so many factors...
Imagine how unstable they make the chemical reactions inside the catalytic converter and what other more harmful toxic emissions the unstable chemical reactions produce that are NOT being checked or measured such as Nerve gas, Cyanide gas and Hydrogen Sulphur gas (smells like rotten eggs), in ADDITION to the common toxic emissions, Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbons (HC) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx).
